Wellingborough Museum is a local history museum in Wellingborough town centre in Northamptonshire.
The museum is located inside a building dating from 1892 that started life as a swimming baths but was converted to a shoe factory in 1919. There are two large gallery areas with a range of exhibits including information about the prehistory of the area which includes a display of fossils, displays about various eras in history including the Iron age, Roman Britain, the Middle ages, the Victorian and Edwardian eras and the World wars with artefacts on display including pottery, maps, tools, coins, clothing, photographs, documents and items of furniture. Other exhibit topics include information on the important local industries of shoemaking, lace-making and brewing. There are also a number of room recreations from history including a 1950s living room and kitchen, a school room, an ironmongers shop, a post office and haberdashery.
The museum also makes an effort to be fun for all ages with interactive things to do around the museum including a 1920s pianola that visitors can have a go of and a number of seaside arcade machines from the 1950s which work using pre-decimal currency which you can purchase from the front desk. There's also a model train layout of Wellingborough’s Midland Road Station from 1958 and an outdoor putting green and sandpit are available to use during warm weather plus there are also activity sheets for children. Visitors can use the museum's archives including parish records and record office documents to research their family tree on every third Saturday of the month between 10am and 1pm when a member of the Northants Family History Society will be on hand to help.
