Trewithen is an historic, privately-owned Cornish estate with RHS recommended gardens located between Truro and St Austell just off the A390.
The house was rebuilt in 1715 has been owned and lived in by same family since then. The exterior of the house remains virtually unchanged since the rebuilding. Guided tours of the house are available on selected days.
The 30 acres of woodland gardens feature many species extracted from exotic locations around the world. Among the plants are number of rare species including azaleas, camellias, magnolias, maples, rhododendrons and some exceptionally rare holly.
Other attractions of the gardens include 20 champion trees (being either the tallest or broadest of their type in Britain), plus wildflowers, roses, woodland glades, a fern collection and the longest lawn in Cornwall. There is also an exhibit detailing the history of the gardens with a number of historic gardening artefacts, a Camera Obscura (a darkened room fitted with an external viewing device which projects an image into the room) and a memorial garden with sundial.
The gardens are also home to lots of natural wildlife including red squirrels and wild birds and have received many awards including one of International Camellia Garden of Excellence, awarded in 2012. Garden tours available for an additional fee.
