Threave Estate consists of a restored 19th century house and 64 acres of formal gardens on a 1,600 acre estate near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway.
The house is viewed via guided tours and is decorated in a 1930's style. There is also visitor centre with the shop and an exhibition about the estate's history and wildlife.
The 64 acres of formal gardens are divided into rooms with many having water features including a wildlife pond. Some of the garden rooms are the patio garden, rockery, rhododendron garden, rose garden, secret garden, walled garden, woodland garden and the discovery garden. There is also a tropical glasshouse and the sculpture garden.
The wider estate includes wetlands, woodlands, farmland and 2 miles of the River Dee and contains a bat reserve and a wildfowl sanctuary and the ruins of the 14th century Threave castle on an island in the river Dee which is only accessible by boat. There are way-marked walks through the estate and five bird-watching hides.
