Shugborough Hall and Estate is a Georgian manor house, historically home of the Earls of Lichfield, and a 900 acre riverside estate and now a multi-faceted visitor attraction.
The house contains many interesting features with collections of French furniture, artwork and porcelain displayed around the many fine drawing rooms, state rooms, dining rooms, the library and bedrooms with guides to tell you about them. There is a room with memorabilia relating to Admiral George Anson, the state bedroom once used by Princess Victoria and a photography exhibition of Patrick Lichfield's work. You can also view Patrick Lichfield's apartment with lots of memorabilia relating to him and his photography.
The Staffordshire County Museum is located in the servants quarters and here you will find historical collections and exhibits including a costume collection and a collection of horse-drawn carriages. You will also find costumed actors performing their daily activities as members of staff would in Victorian times, in the kitchen, the laundry, the courtyard and the brew-house (which still brews beer) and using authentic equipment of the time.
The grounds include a walled garden presented as it was in the early 1800's, complete with gardeners and craft workshops (blacksmiths, leather worker, jeweller and wood turner) with craftspeople carrying out their trades as they would have in days of old. Other things to see in the grounds include a butterfly garden, an island arboretum and lots of buildings and monuments including a Chinese pagoda, a neo-classical arch, the tower of winds and the infamous Shepherd's Monument with it's mysterious inscriptions and imagery that are rumoured to point to the location of the holy grail.
The attraction also features the working Shugborough Georgian farm and mill with lots of farm animals to see, a children's play park, a land train ride and costumed farm staff doing demonstrations such as bread making and cheese and butter making and also with a collection of early farm machinery.
