The Oriental Museum is a museum about the art and archaeology of the Orient located on the outskirts of Durham in County Durham.
The museum is divided into a number of galleries relating to the various geographical areas covered. There is a Chinese gallery featuring items such as ceramics, decorative jade items, ivory and bamboo carvings, bronze crafted artefacts, lacquer ware, paintings, calligraphy, textiles and furniture. The Egyptian gallery contains artefacts dating from the Pre-Dynastic to the Coptic periods including sculptures, shoes, carvings, jewellery and stone tools. There are both old and contemporary items on display in the Japanese gallery with the historic items including textiles, weapons and armour, ceramics, lacquer ware, furniture, dolls, games and coins and some of the modern items including manga, street fashion and domestic goods.
Other geographical regions covered include Himalayan, Tibetan & Central Asian; Indian & South Asian; the Islamic World and South East Asia and artefacts on display include such items as weapons and armour, paintings, religious artefacts, manuscripts, ceramics, textiles, musical instruments, coins gaming items and furniture.
