Hatfield House is a Jacobean mansion built in the early 1600's with formal gardens, and the largest privately owned estate in Hertfordshire.
The grounds also contain the remains of the palace that was once owned by King Henry VIII and the home of Elizabeth I up until she ascended to the throne. The main house is resplendent with fine Jacobean features and works of art including a portrait of Queen Elizabeth I. The house has it's own chapel with beautiful stained glass windows, an armoury, a Victorian kitchen and a library containing more than 10,000 books.
The gardens are divided into the West gardens and the East gardens, with the East gardens being on the private side of the house and are only open on Wednesdays for an additional fee. There is a map available from the shop highlighting three walks through the park of varying length.
The estate also contains Hatfield farm park, with an additional entrance fee, with farm animals to feed and pet, tractor rides plus a miniature train ride and some play areas for children. There is also a retail area called the Stable Yard Shops featuring a range of independent shops including the Hatfield gift shop plus a sweet shop, a toy shop, an antique shop and others. Access to this area is free of charge.
