Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum is the remains of a Roman Fort built around 160AD, a museum and some reconstructions of Roman buildings.
Located in South Shields, 4 miles from the end of Hadrian's wall the Fort was used for garrisoning troops and supplying other forts along Hadrian's wall and also had a civilian settlement around it. Artefacts excavated from the fort and civilian settlement are on display in the museum and include such items as jewellery, military equipment, coins and pottery.
The gateway, a Commanding Officer's house and a barrack block, that would have been a part of the fort, have also been reconstructed and decorated in keeping so you can see how they would have looked. They have also recreated a Roman garden growing herbs and plants that would have been grown in the period.
